Now this has been a job! I have wanted to build my own cnc machine for a few months now and I started on it in December of 2003.  This project is way beyond anything I have ever done before when it comes to machining. However, I manage one of the most technologically advanced plastic fabrication plants in the country and we have several cnc machines that I run daily. So, building one is a different story. I have used every tool in the shop to build this one!
Am I machining wax?
Well, yes of course. I wanted to get started on seeing what bugs I need to fix and I was looking around the house and found some candles that were slightly used and boxed up. Well, I don’t think they will ever be used again so, I am using them now. This is the first part that was ran correctly, it started where I told it to and it did exactly what it was asked to do. One hour and 34 min later, I had completely faced the candle. I know that seems like along time, but I was wanting to test durability over time and I was also taking very light cuts. As you can see, I came out flat. I guess next I will cut out a part or two. Not bad for only running the machine a couple of times.
As you can see from my other web pages, I like to show as much detail as possible when it comes to my projects, however I can’t do that here. There is a gentleman that sells plans on the web to make one of these machines and is from what I understand, he is trying to make a living at it. I did not purchase his plans after exchanging a couple of emails with him and just looking around the web at other projects. I do not want interfere with how this man makes a living, so I will not be showing much detail here. Also, he uses hand tools to make his machine and is basic in how they are constructed from what I understand. I own a lathe and mill and I did not want to build this machine with basic hand tools when I have these types of machine available to me. So I started machining parts until I had my first axis and then I just duplicated it from there.
Here are the links that I checked out when I started this project.
I will add some links and a few more details in a few days! Dean
