South Bay Poly Essay #134 (May 2006)

“Why Not?”

Long ago but not so far away (it was actually 1986, I think, and down on the south end of San Jose -- about 25 miles away) a library invited one of the better-know Wiccan authors to speak on her religion. Certain Christian fundamentalists were outraged: Government funds were being used to pay a witch to speak! The day of the talk, the Christians demonstrated outside the library. Unusually, some witches and pagans materialized to counter-demonstrate.

What's this got to do with polys?

A youngish pagan demonstrator was wearing a button which said:

"Witches and Christians working together."

Someone nearby (a Christian? A pagan? An innocent bystander?) asked:

"Do you really think that is possible?"

And I answered "Yes!"

Of course, it depends on the Christians...and the witches.

But what has this got to do with polys?

I learned recently that there is now a Yahoo Group for monogamous people involved with polys -- and another Yahoo Group for polys involved with monogamous people.

This is half the way, or more, towards something I've toyed with, now and then: A place where polys and monos come together to compare experiences and learn from one another.

I'd be curious to hear the concerns of the monogamous and share my own concerns. Maybe someday...

Why not now?

Because this sort of dialogue -- essentially an "interfaith" dialogue -- requires two rather different sorts of people to listen to one another on a deep level and respect one another in spite of their very distinct gut feelings.

But why shouldn't we?

"Here's looking at you, Kid!"
