South Bay Poly Essay #104 (August 2003)

"Venus and Mars?"

Are polys from Venus? Are the monogamous from Mars? Sometimes it does seem as if we are from different planets.

Over the past several weeks, in the comic strip Luann (by Greg Evans - I've quoted it before), readers have watched Bernice get jealous because her boyfriend Zane had been talking to another woman. This annoyed me. The first thing that annoyed me was Bernice's jealousy, because Zane really had just been talking to the other woman. What was Bernice so upset about?

The second issue involves some background. Bernice turns around and throws herself at another acquaintance, Gunther. She kisses Gunther right in front of Zane. Nonplussed, Zane suggest that perhaps she and Gunther should go on a date. To spite Zane, Bernice immediately asks Gunther out.

But of course Bernice doesn't really want to go out with Gunther (or does she???) - she wants to be with Zane. But Zane has some issues of his own to work through, and wants some time alone. Does he mind Bernice going out with Gunther? I don't know!

What struck me was Bernice's reaction to Zane's suggestion that she go out with Gunther. It bothered her. She wants Zane all to herself. Zane is different, and she doesn't understand. How can he encourage her to go out with another guy?

I imagine that she is thinking: If he doesn't mind my seeing Gunther - and even encouraging it -- he must not care very much about me.

The Monogamist Trap (or one of them). It bothered her. How could it be okay with him?

Check it out on the web or an old newspaper. The sequence begins on July 15th - and peaks (for me) on July 28th - though the story line is still progressing (Note: I believe the website dates are one day ahead of the newspaper dates).
