January 1st, 1862 Wednesday. Very high wind, forenoon warm to cold. Baked pies and worked over a lot of butter and cleaned the dinning room. Got the stove moved and the carpet down, got supper. Willie Farr called, also Jane.

This is the begining of a one year slice of the life of Lucy Orpha Parker Ward, wife of Erasmus Darwin (Dar) Ward and mother of Willie C. Ward who lived in the N.E. corner of Ohio in what was then called Lindenville or Wayne Corners, Wayne Township, Ashtabula County. Lucy Orpha Parker was born September 23, 1835 in Williamsfield Township, Ashtabula County, daughter of David Parker and his second wife Abigail Miranda Perkins. Erasmus Darwin (Dar) Ward was born June 17, 1832 in Wayne Township, Ashtabula County, son of Sylvester Ward and Eliza Coleman. Dar Ward and Lucy Parker were married in Lindenville, December 21, 1854 and had one son, Willie C. Ward born October 19, 1855.
Lucy was a hard working farm woman, dedicated choir member of the Congregational Church, active in the Ladies Soldiers Aid Society and a strong supporter of the administration of then president Abraham Lincoln.
The text of the diary gives some insight into the day to day life on a rural farm during the Civil War year of 1862. You will be able to follow Lucy through everyday farm life of making cheese and butter, doing chores of cooking and sewing for her family, making care packages to be sent to Union soldiers and socializing with friends and family from near and far.
While reading the diary, please keep in mind that while Lucy was born, raised and died in Ashtabula County, many of the events and people mentioned were just south of there, in Trumbull County, Ohio.
