Nichiren Shoshu Lost 5 Major Court Cases in Japan
HOT NEWS ITEM - Major Japanese Newspapers (Asahi, Mainichi) Reported on April 8, 2003 an Unprecendented Incident in the History of Japanese Religion - Nichiren Shoshu Taiseki-ji Head Temple (Under Supervision of High Priest Nikken Abe) Admits Throwing Away Ashes (Cremated remains) without the Families Permission!
Tokyo high court ordered Nichiren Shoshu to pay 2 million Yen to 4 family members who took legal action in March 2000 after they learned that the remaining ashes of thousands of the deceased, including their loved ones, had been put into old rice bags together with dead animals and other trash. Most of these bags were found to be stored in these neglected and poor conditions in a special building for this purpose. Furthermore, some of these bags were already buried in an unauthorized section of the temple grounds without obtaining the families permission.
These four families conducted a survey into how other major Buddhist sects in Japan handle the remains of the deceased. The other temples were shocked by Nichiren Shoshu's behavior and condemned it. They said these actions not only went against Buddhism, but against common decency and morality. Their findings were submitted to the court as evidence of neglect within Nichiren Shoshu.
During the court case, Nichiren Shoshu tried to cover their appalling and undignified treatment of the deceased by lying. They claimed the previous High Priest, the late Nittatsu Shonin, already buried the remains with a ceremony and planted trees at that location. However, there were no records of such a ceremony ever having been conducted and it was obvious to the Judge that the current leadership of Nichiren Shoshu was lying. He found Nichiren Shoshu guilty of all misconduct.
1. Nobuhira’s Case, June 26, 2001,
was Dismissed by the Japanese Supreme Court as an Abuse of the Right to
File Suit.
This judgement was extremely rare in the history
of Japanese justice; perhaps as rare as 1/1,000,000 cases. It
pointed out that:
35 copies
of Shukan Shincho magazines, (most popular Japanese magazine in America),
which carried the fabricated stories on the Nobuhiro case. Eiichi
Yamamoto condemns and exposes the scandalous and libelous nature of this
magazine in his book, Verbal Terrorism, published by Ohtori in Tokyo.
2. A Victim of Traffic Accident, Mr. Shiroyama, Was Reported as a Killer by Shukan Shincho
Eiichi Yamamoto also explained in his books, Verbal Terrorism, about how Shukan Shincho fabricated stories. Rev. Ohhashi of a Nichiren Shoshu temple in Hokkaido was a speed car maniac. On the evening of July 21, 1994, he drove his car over 70 mph and crossed over the center line to hit a truck driven by Mr. Shiroyama. Ohhashi died 4 hours later and Shiroyama was injured. Both police and insurance company identified that it was absolutely Ohhashi’s fault.
However, Shukan Shincho learned that Mr. Shiroyama was a local leader of Soka Gakkai. On Septembr 1 issue of Shukan Shincho, it published a totally fabricated story with the title of “Soka Gakkai Leader Killed a Taisekiji Priest.” Shiroyama filed a law suit, and both Sapporo District Court (on 12/20/96) and Sapporo High Court (9/25/97) ordered Shukan Shincho publisher to pay 1,100,000 Yen (about $10,000) for defamation. The publisher appealed. Finally, the Japanese Supreme Court unanimously supported this judgment (3/26/98).
Yamamoto explained that Shukan Shincho publisher can fabricate anything as long as it can damage a certain organization (like Soka Gakkai), or it can sell the magazine with these sensational titles.
3. A Suicide Was Fabricated by Shukan Shincho as Soka Gakkai’s Crime
Mrs. Akiyo Asagi, a city council woman of Higashimurayama City, Tokyo, fell down from her apartment and died on 9/1/95. She was being investigated because she had attempted to steal shirts from a nearby clothing store. She was supposed to attend the hearing in a few days, and the police and the Justice Department concluded that she committed suicide because of the stress.
However, Shukan Shincho reported in two issues (9/14 ns 10/12) that she might be murdered by Soka Gakkai because she has been active in anti-Soka Gakkai movement.
Soka Gakkai filed a suit against the publisher, and the Tokyo District Court (5/18/2001) ordered the publisher to pay 2,000,000 Yen (about $16,000). The publisher accepted it and paid the amount to Soka Gakkai. According to Yamamoto, the fact that the publisher paid without appealing clearly shows that the publisher knowingly fabricated the story.
4. High Priest Nikken's "Seattle Prostitute Incident" Was Judged Real at Tokyo District Court!
On March 21, 2000 at 1:00 PM, Mr. Fumio Shimoda, a Chief judge of Tokyo District Court, announced the verdict. Points of his findings were :
1. Nikken declared that if this
was true, he would quit the high priest position. Further, some Nichiren
Shoshu priests declared that they would quit priesthood if this was true.
Therefore, this Seattle Incident has "Public Interest."
2. Soka Gakkai publicized this
incident by considering that this casts serious doubt upon Nikken's position
not only as High Priest and the administrator of Nichiren Shoshu, but also
as a Buddhist priest. Therefore, Soka Gakkai's reports have "Public Value."
3. All evidence submitted to the
court proved that Nikken had sexual relationships with prostitutes.
4. Nikken's testimonies at his
three court appearances were full of contradictory descriptions and they
cannot be trusted.
5. Nikken altered a document. He
used his diary as a proof of his innocence. But his writing "Let's go to
bed. It is 1 PM (Nikken was supposed to write 1 AM)" was added at a later
date.
6. In conclusion, it is evident
that, when Nikken visited Seattle as Study Division Chief of Nichiren Shoshu
to conduct the first Gohonzon Conferral Ceremony, he had a sexual relationship
with a prostitute, and asked another prostitute to have her picture taken.
Then, a disagreement of the price occurred, and while they were fighting,
Nikken was caught by policemen.
7. Nikken's claim that the Soka
Gakkai's reports constitute a libel is rejected. Nikken has to pay all
the costs for this legal case.
(It is quite a coincidence. This incident took place in the early morning of March 20, 1963. The time the verdict was read corresponds to the late evening of March 20th in USA, which is the same date when the incident occurred 37 years ago!!).

Abe (father) and the lawsuit against Shinsho Abe (son) for his violence
are nothing unusual for Nichiren Shoshu. Nichiren Shoshu 60th High Priest
Nikkai Abe (grandfather) got the High Priest position by
coup-d'etat and bribed election.
His sex scandal was very popular
among the priesthood. Nikken Abe got the position of 67th High Priest by
lying
that he had been appointed by the 66th High Priest Nittatsu. Nikken's
sex scandal and the use of believer's offerings for gorgeous Geisha party
are well documented by two
books published by reformation priests.
Grandfather -> Father -> Son: This
is the KECHIMYAKU or the "Heritage of the Ultimate Law of Life" in a
cult religion, Nichiren Shoshu.

Kovalenko told me (the book editor), "Recently, Ikeda SENSEI sent me
a book with his autograph. I phoned SGI in Tokyo and was able to talk to
SENSEI. When I told him that I always appreciate his kindness, SENSEI said
that he is always praying for my health." By watching such a happy, smiling
face of Kovalenko, I was puzzled why this unprecedented, Communist schemer
and Machiavellian respects Ikeda from the bottom of his heart with such
seriousness and respect.
[C] RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SGI
AND NICHIREN SHOSHU PRIESTHOOD
Soka Gakkai in Japan and Soka Gakkai
International (SGI) were laymen's organizations of the Nichiren Shoshu
Buddhist sect. Both organizations were registered as religious organizations
separate from Nichiren Shoshu, but they supported the priesthood wholeheartedly
from 1930 until 1991. However, in 1991, 67th High Priest Nikken Abe excommunicated
Soka Gakkai and SGI in order to recruit their members under the temple-controlled
organization called Hokkeko (Lotus Sutra group) or Danto (Temple-affiliated
believers) to collect more offerings to the priesthood. Since Soka Gakkai
and SGI are separate orgnizations, they decided to practice Buddhism of
Nichiren Daishonin, which is a religion of equality and peace, independently
from the authoritarian priesthood. Members in 148 countries are working
toward the lofty goal of establishing happy and peaceful world, which is
the legacy of Nichiren Daishonin.
The SGI Charter
states
that SGI is going to accomplish this goal through dialogue and cooperation
with people of different religions and ethnic backgrounds based upon cultural
and educational exchanges. Daisaku Ikeda, President of SGI, is respected
as an "Ambassador for Peace" from around the world, because he has
changed the trend of the 20th century from confrontation to coexistence
and from hatred to dialogue for peace.
Ikeda has
established a long-lasting friendship with communist countries by overcoming
the differences of ideology and belief based upon mutual trust, friendship
and cultural exchange. In his each visit to USSR, Ikeda urged the Prime
Ministers of USSR to meet and talk with the President of USA to end the
"Cold War." As we all witnessed, it happened. Ikeda also played an important
role to resolve confronation between USSR and China. His proposals and
actions resulted in the Sino-Japan peace treaty (in the 1970's) and in
the establishment of peaceful relationship between Korea and Japan (in
the 1990's).
In Africa, Argentina, Brazil, China,
Europe, India, Korea, Philippine, Russia, South America and USA - and in
many other countries, SGI is recognized as a humanistic organization contributing
to peace and prosperity of respective countries. It is regarded as the
beacon of hope for the coming 21st century.
The first president Makiguchi and
then the general director Toda were arrested during World War II because
of their anti-war stance. Makiguchi died in prison. On
the contrary, Nichiren Shoshu priesthood cooperated the war effort.
For the past 30 years, the Japanese
majority party (LDP) has utilized anti- Gakkai activists and tabloid journals
to spread fabricated stories (mostly sex scandals) of the Soka Gakkai leader
in order to win election over Komeito party, which is supported by Soka
Gakkai members. When LDP finally lost majority membership, the Prime Minister
apologized Soka Gakkai for having attacked using fabricated stories. Then,
shortly after, LDP offered Komeito the cabinet seat and begged to form
a coalition government together. This
proved that all past media campaigns against Soka Gakkai were groundless
and politically motivated. A man who played a key role in this campaign
was Masatomo
Yamazaki who had been jailed for blackmailing Soka Gakkai.
Nichiren Shoshu is a High
Priest Worshipping Religion. The priesthood and its temple affiliated
believers (Danto), who form a laymen's organization (Hokkeko), practice
a
religion of authority and a religion of discrimination.
A Hokkeko member criticized and looked down SGI members by saying "Most
of us (Hokkeko members) have college degrees." .
As seen in the USENET newsgroup
- alt.religion.buddhism.nichiren, Hokkeko members like
obscene language. They frequently use filthy language
and
are very abusive.
A Hokkeko member wrote,"n*****,
k***, s*** and a s**** as well."
They criticize SGI's efforts to
have dialogue with different religions and ethnic groups, and called
Christians
and Muslims as "Slanderer." They made an insulting statement for
Nelson Mandela, too.
Since the priests believe that
they are special, they always engage in various illegal efforts. In Japan,
out of 600 Nichiren Shoshu temples, 73
temples were police investigated for violation of the maintenance of ashes,
and dozens of them got fined. In overseas, They have been severely
criticized in Argentina, Brazil, Ghana, Korea, Sri Lanka and Taiwan (Formosa).
In Argentina, a Nichiren Shoshu priest criticized
Mother Teresa as a "Demon of Mercy." This upset everyone. It was also
disclosed that the priesthood was engaging in illegal propagation activity.
The Argentina government banned Nichiren Shoshu. Never-the-less, Hokkeko
members are still insulting Mother Teresa and Catholicism. In Brazil,
the Nichiren Shoshu temple was seized by the judiciary system because of
temple's illegal attempt to take over Brazilian SGI. In Korea, several
Nichiren Shoshu priests were fined and deported because of their illegal
propagation activity. In Ghana
and Taiwan, several public newspapers criticized the corrupted reality
of Nichiren Shoshu priesthood. In
Sri Lanka, Nichiren Shoshu was already banned.
All of the problems of Nichiren
Shoshu priesthood were caused by distorted
faith and low life conditions of 67th High priest Nikken Abe. In fact,
Nikken did not succeed the High Priest position from 66th High Priest Nittatsu.
He
stole it after Nittatsu suddenly died. Nikken is the first High Priest
in Nichiren Shoshu history who had a serious doubt
on the authenticity of the Dai-Gohonzon. This was disclosed by the
"Memo" of Jitoku Kawabe, a Nichiren Shoshu priest.
Disgusted with Nikken sect, about
40 temples (out of 600) left Nikken between 1992-1998. In 1999, already
4 temples have left the Nikken sect, which are Ho-onji,
Zenchoji,
Daienji
and
Renshuji.
After the "Kawabe Memo" leaked out which proved that Nikken has doubted
the authenticity of the Dai-Gohonzon, 10,000 Japanese temple members (Hokkeko
or Danto) have left Nikken sect just in the past few months.
