Ashtabula County, Ohio Hayes Cemetery Roberts Cemetery
Wayne Center Cemetery HISTORY On the 4th of February, 1808, Mrs. Thankful Fobes, grandmother of Joshua Fobes,, died suddenly at his home. It was the first death in the township and appeared to impress the people with a feeling of deep solemnity. It then became necessary to decide upon the location of a cemetery. Simon Fobes Jr., Joshua Fobes, Titus Hayes, and Elisha Giddings met at the home of Joshua Gidding's cabin (in lot 45) and proceeded to select a suitable location for a graveyard. Mr. Hayes proposed to donate the land. It was then an unbroken wilderness. The site agreed upon was some little distance out of the center of the town, and is still occupied as a burial ground (now known as the Center Cemetery). Three days later her husband was buried by the side of his deceased wife in our first graveyard. In Volume H, Page 320 of Ashtabula Co. Record of Deeds we find under date of 1829 this parcel of ground now known as the Center Cemetery, was deeded to Jerry, Calvin Andrews, and Levi Fobes, Trustees of Wayne Township. (1829) The deed describes the boundaries as follows- On the south by lot line 12 rods east, 12 rods north, 12 rods west, 12 rods south, and contains 144 rods of ground (Volume H Page 320) (Quit claim) (1829) About 1865 a deed for a right of way was given the then trustees by Wolcott and Adella Minor, Along the north side of the lot line East from the North and South Center Road. (Route 90) Line fence controversy between Trustees of Wayne Township and A.D.Debow. See Wayne Record book #3 under date of April 7, 1873. Revised and updated by, Anna J. Hasson 1996
