Amateur Radio station WB3LGC
Hobbies (Ham Radio, Woodworking, Metalworking, Astronomy and Camping) all take my time. I try my best to combine activities. In 1998 I purchased a Jayco Eagle 10 ST RD pop-up trailer to use for family camping (Summer vacation, star parties, Field Day) and I have modified it to use as a portable radio station. I will be adding information about the RV modifications (lights, antenna, solar and batteries).
I got into metalworking as a way of modifying or making antenna parts. I also had the idea of creating a retirement business, by making some widgit and selling it at the hamfests. Then, I found a whole new area of model making I didn't know existed. I found scale model gasoline engines, steam engines and steam locomotives are being made in small home machine shops, like mine. How can I resist?
Did I mention I live in an 85+ year old house? I have a motto, "Have a job, buy a tool." I have lots of jobs to do. Now, ...how does a new QRP kit help refinish the kitchen?
In 1999 I did FD and even operated while camping a few times. It looks like I might even mount the HF rig in the mini-van for the next family trip. When the wife drives, I'll operate.
By the time FD 2000 came, I had an Elecraft K2 QRP kit built and used it to operate the solar powered station for the extra points. I had a great time putting the radio together. It's fun to operate the rig. I added the SSB option as I am yet to have the time I need to get my code speed up where I would like. Someday I'll retire and have "all the time I need" to enjoy the hobby. In the mean time I'll continue breaking through DX pile-ups with 10 watts or less on sideband.
In August of 2000, my wife, Renee took her Technician class test and passed (100%). She is now KB3FMT. In December of 2004, my son Andrew became KB3LUF. In April of 2005, my son Robert is planning on passing his test next weekend to become KB3L** or KB3M**.
I am also active with Boy Scout Troop 30 in Stanton, DE and I will be an active member of the K2BSA/4 demonstration station for the 2005 Boy Scout National Jamboree. For more information about the 2005 Boy Scout National Jamboree (from a proper Ham Radio viewpoint), see the following web locations:
