Goals for the Fortran tools project

This project was initially motivated by a proposal I made to (now) NCITS J3, for an addition to the F95 standard, Fortran generics. The main proposals are provided here: the initial proposal 97-117.txt , and the more detailed 97-118r1.txt . These proposals were made too late in the F2000 design phase to be considered seriously. Implementing these proposals requires a fairly complete Fortran semantics analysis, in particular of module and procedure interfaces.

While this work was motivated by my proposal, it is my hope that it might have other applications:

• A compiler front end (Information on interfacing to the GCC backend is available from Johny Bartlett);
• Fortran garbage collection;
• A testbed for Fortran 200x;
• a portable Fortran IDE; or
• A Fortran lint.

I am interested in collaborating with others on this project, but my AOL webpages are not an appropriate site to serve as a center for such a collaboration. Such a collaboration will need:

• A central repository under CVS control capable of containing significantly more than 10 MBytes of files.
• A fast ftp connection.
• An email list to coordinate the collaborator's efforts.
• A central committee to coordinate efforts.
