Welcome to the Murdock Family Home Page for Genealogists!

genealogy n (pl genealogies) a recorded history of one's ancestry; the study of family descent; lineage. This home page pertains to the Murdock family that descended from Robert Murdock the earliest known Murdock in my family line. His birth is given as September 6, 1665 in Sterling, Scotland. During the early part of 1680 there was a considerable immigration from Scotland and it is thought that Robert came to the United States during that period. He was married to Hanna Stedman in Roxbury, Massachusetts on April 28, 1692. Records further show that Robert died in Newton, Ma. on April 28, 1754. To-date we have no information regarding Robert’s passage to the U. S. neither as to the ship he traveled on nor as to any person that may have taken the trip with him. Succeeding generations of this Murdock family moved West through New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois and Iowa. As various generations of this family line moved West they expanded and branches moved into surrounding states and some went further west to Nebraska, Kansas and Utah. At the present time my family record contains over 6600 names of individuals that are directly related or that became associated with the family through marriage.

It is recognized that several Murdock families appeared in America during the 1600’s. Any connection between these families has never been established. It appears that information about any relationships among these families will need to be found in Scottish records which is a difficult endeavor because of the unsettled conditions that existed in Scotland during and prior to the 1600’s. During this period the conflict that existed between various hostile forms of church government resulted in records being either maintained haphazardly or destroyed. Some genealogists have expressed the opinion that it is doubtful the ancestry of any early Scotch immigrant to America can be definitely established. It is hoped that this is found not to be true in this particular research project.

Current Genealogy Research Objectives

  1. To secure more information about the life of Robert Murdock who was born in Scotland and died in Massachusetts.

  2. To find the ancestors of Robert Murdock.

  3. To secure more information about the following families:

KERR – Samuel Kerr, my earliest known Kerr, was born in Ireland, October, 1813 and died in Van Buren County, Iowa in on December 24, 1895. He first appears .in Ohio in 1840’s; after 1850 he and his descendents are found in Van Buren County, Iowa where an offspring Elsie Delila Kerr married Reynolds Cyrus Murdock in 1921.

PIKE -- William Pike, my earliest known Pike, leaves Indiana in 1856 and settles in Page County, Iowa. Here William Pike unsuccessfully attempted to develop Page City as the county seat. Family history is vague after his death in 1874. An offspring Elsie E. Pike married William Mort in 1870; they had an offspring Floy May Mort who married Samuel Clyde Kerr in 1899.

DAVIS – Samuel Davis, my earliest known Davis, and his wife Rhoda Hilton appear in New Milford, Ct. in the late 1700’s. They later moved to Delaware County, NY where an offspring Clarissa Dorr Davis married John Savage Murdock in 1812.

JORDAN – Cyrus P. Jordan, my earliest known Jordan, was born in Ohio in 1818 and by 1838 was in Springfield, Ill. He later went to Sigourney, Ia. and finally to Geneva, Neb. While in Sigourney an offspring Alcy Jane Jordan married Melancthon Murdock in 1856.

The ancestry report uses 'Ahnentafel' numbering. This means that a person's parent's numbers will be twice as large as the person's number. So if someone's number is 15, her father will be number 30, and mother will be 31. Her child will be number 7.
