CRANE/CRAIN FAMILY

FAMILY HISTORY OF ISAAC CRANE and MARY

Isaac Crane was born in New York on April 9, 1799. He later moved to Sussex County New Jersey where he married Mary Compton on January 10th 1824. Her parents were Joseph Compton and Lydia Mitten. Lydia's father Thomas Mitten had served in the County Militia as a private 4th class of the 5th Battalion, under Captain John Buchanan, from 1780-1782.We know of seven children born to Isaac and Mary while they were in NJ. The family then moved to Burlington Twp. in Bradford Co. circa 1849. It seems that Mary's brother George had come to Bradford County with his family prior to their arrival. Isaac was a farmer at the time of their move. Their known children are:

Andrew began working in the mines in Barclay. He and Catherine had 5 children. Two of his boys, Fred and William also worked in the coalmines in the late 1800's. Sometime between 1850 and 1860 Andrew changed the spelling of his last name to Crain. It is unknown why this occurred. Their children are:

Children, Mary, Elizabeth

Andrew, Elvira and Robert, Ben, William and Elizabeth, and Andrews brother David are all burried in Franklindale.

Frank Crain m Elizabeth Schrader and they had four children. Sometime in the early 1900's the family moved to Winburn in Clearfield Co. They went there to work in the coalmines as the mines in Barclay were mostly closed by this time. Around 1922 Frank and his son Fred moved back to Monroeton where they opened a garage which they operated as F.E.Crain and Son for many years. Around 1932, their son Max, who had been Postmaster of Winburn for many years, moved back to Towanda where he also opened a garage. When Frank died in 1935 his mother,Catherine, was still living. She died in 1937 at the age of 97. Frank and Elizabeth's children were:
