Readers Survey. The cover features an interesting juxtaposition of three
different yet equivalent scenes--a fantasy battle, a miniatures setup, and
a Society for Creative Anachronism battle.
Inside the magazine are articles on assassins, the history of the Swiss
Confederation and its military, armies of the Renaissance, book and game
reviews, a huge compilation of Dungeon Masters across the United States,
an article on D&D and where it's going by Gary Gygax, an article on the
then-new 4th Dimension game from TSR, a huge sneak peek at the upcoming
AD&D Dungeon Masters Guide, and a long article on pole arms by Gary Gygax.
The first page of the issue contains the annual statement of ownership and
circulation, revealing that the magazine at this time had a total circulation
of under 8,000 copies. The usual Wormy and Fineous Fingers cartoons. |

Awful Green Things counters uncut. This goofy Tom Wham game was later
published by TSR as a stand-alone boardgame, but this is the original game
as it appeared back in 1979. The game begins with a full-page cartoon of
the Znutar on its maiden voyage (continuing the first cartoon that appeared
in issue #27. The game continues with five pages of standard and optional
rules. The centerpiece of the magazine is a heavy stock, three-page (tri-fold)
that contains the game board and all the counters for the game.
Inside the magazine is a very colorful article on the politics of Hell (inlcuding
stats for Satan and his top lieutenants!), an article of developers' notes
on the upcoming(!) Dungeon Master's Guide, articles on the Battle of Austerlitz
and re-creating it, a preview article on the DMG, about incorporating guns
into AD&D, an article about elvish miniatures, info on incorporating
classical heroes into your game, among other articles. A Fineous Fingers
cartoon rounds out the issue. |

Awful Green Thing variant This magazine features two gaming inserts,
both from Tom Wham. The first is an expansion to his Awful Green Things From
Outer Space game, called Outside the Znutar. This contains rules for venturing
outside the spaceship Znutar from AGTFOS, as well as cutout color counters
(on a heavy cardstock insert) representing spacesuited characters from the
game. The ship's three boats (Scout, Cockship, and Saucer) are also on the
insert, as these can be entered and moved around the outside of the Znutar.
http://members.aol.com/gamepicks/tsrdm040.jpg
The second gaming insert, on the same color fold-out insert as the first,
is a new mini-game from Tom Wham, entitled Runngus's Game. This has a small,
color map, about 15 color counters, and a page of rules. It is related to
his Snit family of games (Snit Smashing and Snit's Revenge).
Both game inserts are still inside the game, in mint condition, with all
the counters and the map still uncut on the cardstock insert.
The rest of the issue contains an article about player characters dueling
to settle arguments, another on lesser-known types of lycanthropes, a couple
of scenarios for the Squad Leader game, a comprehensive index of the contents
of all seven Strategic Review issues (the precursor to The Dragon) and the
first 38 issues of The Dragon, and the addition of four new monsters to the
AD&D world--the Fire-Eye Lizard, the Flitte, the Wingless Wonder, and
the Huntsman. Rounding out the issue is the color serial cartoon Jasmine
and a full-page color comic set aboard the Znutar, by Tom Wham. |
