#22 February 1979 EX $20 Readers Survey. The cover features an interesting juxtaposition of three different yet equivalent scenes--a fantasy battle, a miniatures setup, and a Society for Creative Anachronism battle.
Inside the magazine are articles on assassins, the history of the Swiss Confederation and its military, armies of the Renaissance, book and game reviews, a huge compilation of Dungeon Masters across the United States, an article on D&D and where it's going by Gary Gygax, an article on the then-new 4th Dimension game from TSR, a huge sneak peek at the upcoming AD&D Dungeon Masters Guide, and a long article on pole arms by Gary Gygax. The first page of the issue contains the annual statement of ownership and circulation, revealing that the magazine at this time had a total circulation of under 8,000 copies. The usual Wormy and Fineous Fingers cartoons.

#28 August 1979 VG Awful Green Things counters uncut. This goofy Tom Wham game was later published by TSR as a stand-alone boardgame, but this is the original game as it appeared back in 1979. The game begins with a full-page cartoon of the Znutar on its maiden voyage (continuing the first cartoon that appeared in issue #27. The game continues with five pages of standard and optional rules. The centerpiece of the magazine is a heavy stock, three-page (tri-fold) that contains the game board and all the counters for the game.
Inside the magazine is a very colorful article on the politics of Hell (inlcuding stats for Satan and his top lieutenants!), an article of developers' notes on the upcoming(!) Dungeon Master's Guide, articles on the Battle of Austerlitz and re-creating it, a preview article on the DMG, about incorporating guns into AD&D, an article about elvish miniatures, info on incorporating classical heroes into your game, among other articles. A Fineous Fingers cartoon rounds out the issue.

This issue contains the huge, first-ever compilation of all known errata to the only existing AD&D books at the time (the Monster Manual, the Players Handbook, and the DM Guide), the short story Oasis by Cynthia Frazer, several articles on variants for GDW's Traveller game, an article by Gary Gygax on what's ahead for TSR (interesting reading), another on new rules for gaining experience, another in the continuing series of Giants in the Earth (converting classical heroes of literature into AD&D characters), an article detailing the AD&D National Player Rating System (with a listing of the then-top-ranked players), another on angels and how to incorporate them into AD&D, and an article on SPI's first decade of existence. A Fineous Fingers cartoon rounds out the issue.

#38 June 1980 EX $15 This issue features a game supplement. This is the Ringside boxing simulation game by Brian Blume. This game is complete and in mint condition inside the magazine.

The rest of the issue contains a very long short story by Gardner F. Fox, The Cup of Golden Death (a Niall the Far Traveller story), articles on making dragons more powerful, tesseracts in AD&D, alignment, and the 4th Dimension game, an article on how to run unfriendly NPC mages, and the introduction of the Flolite to the AD&D world's bestiary. The issue ends with a Fineous Fingers cartoon.

Also in this issue is the GenCon XIII schedule, information brochure, and pre-registration form. All are still intact and inside the magazine.

#40 August 1980 EX $20 Awful Green Thing variant This magazine features two gaming inserts, both from Tom Wham. The first is an expansion to his Awful Green Things From Outer Space game, called Outside the Znutar. This contains rules for venturing outside the spaceship Znutar from AGTFOS, as well as cutout color counters (on a heavy cardstock insert) representing spacesuited characters from the game. The ship's three boats (Scout, Cockship, and Saucer) are also on the insert, as these can be entered and moved around the outside of the Znutar. http://members.aol.com/gamepicks/tsrdm040.jpg

The second gaming insert, on the same color fold-out insert as the first, is a new mini-game from Tom Wham, entitled Runngus's Game. This has a small, color map, about 15 color counters, and a page of rules. It is related to his Snit family of games (Snit Smashing and Snit's Revenge).

Both game inserts are still inside the game, in mint condition, with all the counters and the map still uncut on the cardstock insert.

The rest of the issue contains an article about player characters dueling to settle arguments, another on lesser-known types of lycanthropes, a couple of scenarios for the Squad Leader game, a comprehensive index of the contents of all seven Strategic Review issues (the precursor to The Dragon) and the first 38 issues of The Dragon, and the addition of four new monsters to the AD&D world--the Fire-Eye Lizard, the Flitte, the Wingless Wonder, and the Huntsman. Rounding out the issue is the color serial cartoon Jasmine and a full-page color comic set aboard the Znutar, by Tom Wham.

The issue ends with an installment of each of The Dragon's three color serial cartoons--Wormy, Fineous Fingers, and Jasmine.

#44 December 1980 EX $15 Over-size 100 page .The main feature of this issue is the game included inside it--Food Fight! This game takes up the central 24 pages of the magazine, with detailed rules, a game board, and counters. The game board is printed on a heavy cardstock fold-out panel. The counters are printed on the same material. There are over 150 counters, representing characters, food items, events, etc., all still on the original cardstock sheet, uncut and unused. The entire game is still inside the magazine, in its original condition.

Inside the magazine is a new, very long short story of Niall of the Far Travels by Gardner F. Fox, entitled "The Lure of the Golden Godling." There are also several articles on PC and NPC races in AD&D, another in the Giants in the Earth character series, reviews of King of the Mountain and other games, and the addition of two new monsters, the Koodjanuk and the Cryoserpent, into the AD&D world. The issue is rounded out by installments of the color serial cartoons Wormy and Jasmine

Also, if you want to see an actual ad for computer games for sale on Apple, Pet, and TRS-80 computers, this is the issue for you.
