There is an official coat of arms for the name WILES. It is documented in "Burkes General Armory". The description is as follows: "AR TWO BARS GU. ON EACH THREE CROSSES CROSSLETFITCHER OR" or translated " Silver, two red horizontal bars: on each three gold crosses crosslet fitchee".
In my family there is an old tale that three brothers came to America
from Ireland. This seemed impossible as there aren't many people named Wiles
in Ireland today. Every indication was that they came from Wales. Wiles also
means, "Man from Wales". Other spelling of this surname is: Whiles, Wild,
Wilds, Wyles.
Another old family tale is that our ancestor immigrated on a potato boat
to America.
New information is that three Wiles brothers landed in Delaware. One named
Abraham settled in Delaware. The second one settled in Maryland, there is
record of a Thomas there. The last one in the present state called West Virginia.
Possibly there names were Samuel or Nathaniel.
I located John Wiles, also spelled Whiles, Wilds, and Wyles. Not much is
known about John at this time other than he lived in Davidson County, Tennessee,
latter Sumner County. He owned 384 acres of land and was active in the community.
There are numerous court records in Davidson and Sumner Counties. John died
in 1806. It is believe that his wife was named Sally and his adult children
John, and William, and minor children were George, Jenny, Samuel, and Margaret.
His will listed his children along with a woman named Sally.
It is possible that the William Wiles listed above, married a Nancy McKee
on 18 Mar 1805 in Sumner County, TN. William's surname was spelled Wyles.
Nancy was the daughter of Alexander McKee of Ireland and Mary Bean of America.
To further complicate matters the records are still sparse. The only record
shows that William and Nancy had two daughters Elizabeth (1813) and Martha
(1815). It is believed that they had three sons named John (1805), William
(1807), and Alexander (1809). A record was found that did list William and
Alexander as sons of William and Nancy Wyles. The source person also listed
William being married to Louisa McKee. There wasn't a Louisa McKee, but a
Louisa Park married John Wiles. This was confirmed from the Park Family Bible.
The parents are still being researched. To further complicate matters. On
the 1860 Tennessee Census for Davidson County there is a William Wyles age
53. There is also a William Wiles on the 1860 Arkansas Census from Lawrence
County, age 53. All the dependents names are listed under the census web
link for each state. Both William's list place of birth as Tennessee.
Most of John (28 Dec 1805) and Louisa's children lived in Izard and Sharp Counties after the Civil War. They can be found on the various census records between 1870 and 1930. The base of the family lives in both counties today over 140 years later.
Alexander Wiles lived in Tennessee all of his life. First in Maury County, then Marshall County, and passing sometime after 1880. He is buried in Carroll County, Tennessee. If you have any comments, suggestions or information please contact Gary Wiles
