Writing That Fan Letter

Here are some suggestions on writing fan letters:

I have written only about 20 fan letters in my long and not so boring life. I have received replies from at least a quarter of them and one letter started an endearing friendship that has lasted over 12 years. So, I feel I am a bit qualified to make suggestions. I have received personal mail from actress Hayley Mills, writer Lady Mary Stewart, singer Neil Diamond and my very first-Devern Bookwalter, an English actor I saw at a play in the 8th grade. I have received not personal acknowledgement from The Monkees (ok dating myself real bad).

1-Always include a stamped self addressed envelope. If you are writing to someone out of the country, then of course you cannot provide a stamp.

2-Keep the letter short and to the point. Celebrities are busy people. Tell them why you admire them. It could be a movie you saw, etc. If you write more than two pages-make sure your address is on every page. One turn off for a celebrity is a pledge of undying love-"I love you, want to have your baby." What can a person answer to that? These people have more depth than is portrayed on the screen. Treat them like human beings and not fantasy imaginations and your chances increase.

3-Be sincere.

4-Don't expect an answer overnight. Celebrities are away a lot. Some have others go through their mail and separate the chaff from the wheat. Make your stand out but do not use crayon or any other hard to read tools.

Hope this helps and good luck!
