The wonderfully fun Lightning Racer at Hersheypark opened in 2000.  On my first ride, I knew I was "in love"!  It immediately jumped into my top ten, offering my kind of ride.  It features airtime that's natural and fun, an incredibly ingenious layout, fabulous trains (my favorite coaster trains), and exciting racing opportunities.  More, here is a park that FINALLY understands what a racing coaster is for!  They race it!  These trains remind me so much of those on my beloved Coney Island Tornado.  I like banking, twisting track.  How can I not like this ride?  While I wish it had more power or speed, at night it does.  And the view from the lift hill of all that trackage with all those tracer lights is like a fantasy!  If only the park would get rid of that laser show so we could enjoy more nighttime rides again....
The ride begins with several small dips enroute to the lift hills.  Typical of a Fred Church style ride, Mike Boodley designed the Lightning Racer to feature twists as well as those dips.  If they were only covered with a tunnel!
The single-bench cars are unlike anything we have seen in decades!
Hersheypark, by the way, is just lovely.  Filled with gorgeous landscaping in many sections of the park, and providing hanging baskets that are awe-inspiring, photo opportunities exist everywhere!
