Nick's Favorite Weather Links

There are so many. The right one would be nice. At best I have collected some of which are specific for the job.

Foot launched soaring requires special attention to surface winds and local knowledge, hence the focus on micrometeorology. We can help each other. There is a Bulletin Board for foot-launched flight in the Reno/Carson/Tahoe Area. You don't have to join to read or post. All visitors welcome. Members will share photos, vote in poles, and other bells and whistles. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/slide

Check these the Night Before:

You should know about this one and use the convective stuff: http://www.awc-kc.noaa.gov/

http://www.dr-jack.net/BLIPMAP/CANV/  This is up after 9:30PM and updated during the night. This will show where the lift will be and one can begin route planning. This is the most sophisticated and yet this can be understood by most of us because of its pictorial presentation. Given only one choice for a link… I go most of the summer with only this. Dr. Jack is da Man.

After 7:30 AM check the Soaring Report

Soaring Report http://nimbo.wrh.noaa.gov/Reno/RNOSAFRNO.txt  Not on line at the time of this writing. This has been changed to: Soaring Report http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/reno/javapg/soaring/index.shtml  (The content is not the same as it was)

http://www.dr-jack.net/BLIPMAP/CANV/  again for updates and changes

Check a sailplane club’s message board for a weather commentary http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NevadaSoaringAssociation with any luck there will be a post by Doug Armstrong. This could be later in the morning.

Current Conditions

http://www.nevadadot.com/traveler/rwis/dist2/  Pick one at a time by pointing at the map: The one on the summit of Mt. Rose is on the road in wind shadow, so check DRI's Slide link for the winds aloft. Bulls Eye is just bellow the Christmas Tree and is more like wind at launch. Can be 180 degrees from the top of Slide.

The Kalifornia weather stations are at: http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/mapper?level=2&map=14&quad=16   Donner is nice to have.

Yea, this is the biggie. Bow down and pay homage to the link with the top of Slide Mountain http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/weather/slide.html  Here is the rest of the sensors they have: http://www.wrcc.dri.edu/weather/index.html   A back up for Slide: http://nimbo.wrh.noaa.gov/Reno/remotedata/slide.txt

The Washoe Valley Winds are also available by phone at 775 849-7648. The top of Slide is reported on 162.550 weather radio  (Remember the old days?)
