The Music of the YEMENI

THE MUSIC OF THE YEMENITE JEWS

The Jews of Yemen were almost isolated from 400 BC until 1948 when they returned to Israel.  Their isolation helped them in preserving their original language, faith and culture.  Yemenite Jews reading (chanting) of the Torah is thought to be the original and most accurate way of reading the holy scripture.  Their dance and music seem to have been effected by their society in Yemen.  There are many similarities between the Yemenite arab music and dances to that of the Yemenite Jewish music.  Modern instruments seems to make that less visible, but those who have musical ears will be able to pick up on those similarities.
