The name Sawyer is about as common a name
as they come if you don't believe me check your phone book I guarantee that
there will be at least a column of Sawyers listed.
Researchers have examined reproductions of such ancient
manuscripts as the Domesday Book (1086), the Ragman Rolls (1291-1296), the
Curia Regis Rolls, the Pipe Rolls, the Hearth Rolls, parish registers,
baptismals, and tax records. They found the first record of the Sawyer name
in Norfolk England where they were seated from early times and their first
records appeared on early census rolls taken by the early kings of Britain
to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.
Throughout the centuries the name Sawyer
has occurred in many records, manuscripts and documents but not with the
exact spelling. From time to time the spelling of the name changed. Examples
are ( Sawier, Sawer, Shawyer, Sawyerr,Saywer and Sawyier) Surnames or last
names as we know them today were first used in Europe from the 11th to the
15th century but were not used in England or Scotland until 1066 and were
first found in the domesday book. It was not until the reign of Edward II,
(1307-1327) that the practice became general amongst all people.
These names were adopted according to fairly
general principles and can be generally divided into 4 classifications.
Local namesare taken from places of origin.
Occupational namesdenote the trade or profession of early
users as in the case of Sawyer which is English from the occupation "sawer
- one who cut timber into boards or slates"
Nicknamesdescribed mental,and physical characteristics,
complexion, clothes...etc...etc
And the last known as the patronymic, was the method of taking
the first name of the father as the last name of the son.
The notable English family name Sawyer emerged as an
influential name in the county of Norfolk where they were recorded as a family
of great antiquity seated with the manor of Causton and estates in that shire.
They branched to Cambridge, to Kettering in Northampton and to Heywood in
Berkshire. John Sawyer was High Sheriff of Berkshire. Sir Edmund Sawyer married
into Whitmores of Apley. Admiral Sir Herbert Sawyer was a distinguished Naval
Commander. A member of the family also was Chef to King Charles II.
Amongst the first settlers in North America,
which could be considered a kinsman of the name Sawyer, or variable spelling
of the name was: Francis Sawyer in 1635; following John in 1622; Lydia in
1655; Mary in 1649; Nicholas in 1652; Thomas in 1650; and William in 1623
they settled in Virginia, Massachusetts, Barbados, Portland, San Francisco,
and Philadelphia.
There are many places named with the Sawyer
name such as Sawyer Lake and Mount Sawyer in Labrador, and Sawyers Hill in
Newfoundland. I've also been told there is a bicycle/hiking trail on the
San Francisco Peninsula called the Sawyer Camp Trail. Its 6 miles long and
very scenic.

Coat Of Arms
The Sawyer crest above is described as
follows:
Blue with a chequerd gold and black horizontal stripe between three silver
birds known as seapies. The dog is a Talbot Guardant Proper.
Crest drawn by Amy Duncan, of Brunswick, Maine.
Note: There are several crests for the Sawyer Family,
however they are similar. Most have 3 clam shells, a knight's helmet and
a roll of silk with a hawk's head on top. As I get these other crests I will
add them to the page.
