 Sugar River Raceway
Circleville Raceway Park

Racing takes place at Sugar River Raceway. The track is located in Brodhead, WI, about 18 miles west of Beloit. Brodhead is about 2 hours from downtown Chicago or downtown Milwaukee. It is a tight and technical track with one long straight, the straight being more like 2 straights connected by a full-out Brainerd-type turn one. There is almost every type of turn imagineable in this course, with a wicked "S", a couple of hairpins and some nice switch-back and decreasing radius thrillers. There are passing areas all over the place and overall, you will get a heck of a work-out running this course! The facilities are excellent as well. There is hot food available, indoor bathrooms with running water and a large pit and staging area. The track personnel are super helpful and have treated us like kings. On many of the race Sundays, the track also has a neat thing available, Turn-Key racing. For $75, you rent one of their karts that are set up with Honda 9 horse engines (no governors), and do a full race program in a spec class with the rentals. Kind of like IROC for karts. I guess these will get up to about 45 mph and having driven one, I can tell you that they do haul! For your $, they provide all the safety gear and the kart, you provide the finesse. The cost for the Sunday of racing was $30 last season, and I don't as yet know what it will be for 2003. You get 2 practice sessions in the morning and 3 race heats in the afternoon, 8,8 and 10 laps. We typically have been out of there by 4:30 at the latest.

Bikes showing up included XR100's, TTR125's, Derbi's, an Aprilia 50, a CR60 and several YSR's, some less stock than others. Engine limits are 125cc four strokes and 80cc two strokes. This is due to insurance restrictions from the track's insurance coverage.Safety gear is common sense, but you can either opt for full roadrace gear (full leathers, gloves, boots and helmet) or motocross style (with chest protector, gloves, elbow and knee protectors and helmet). Helmets can be either full-face or open-face moto-x style. Gloves should be leather. Having experienced several close-up views of the track surface, I would highly recommend full roadrace gear.Rules are made with 1 overriding consideration. We are out to have fun, which means we would rather ride than spend all day tech'ing bikes. Accordingly, the rules are as general as possible and we will need to rely on everyone's honesty to make this work.

Joe Jankoski (Dieseljo) has also been good enough to set up a section for us Mini Moto Maniacs on his website, so check that out when you can and support his sponsors when possible. The address is: http://www.dieseljo.com The track website at Sugar River is http://www.sugarriverraceway.com. Check it out as it has a nice photo of the track layout, and other information on what they have to offer.

Another close place to race is Marshalltown, Iowa which is 5 to 6 hours from Chicago. The track, according to Team Calamari, is one of the best YSR tracks in the USA. The program is run like clockwork and you get a lot of track time for your fees. This is a very low key group and the emphasis is on competition and fun.

Another alternative is Ohio YSR League. This track is also about 6 hours, (maybe more), from Chicago.
