Chaos Magick is an extraordinary deconstruction of magick, semantics, and psychology designed to eradicate consensual belief structures and, using the energy freed by this act, glimpse the fractal contours of reality. Concieved and articulated by a British sorcerer artist A.O.Spare in the early part of this century, chaos magick was sytematized by Peter Carroll, whose work Liber Null and Psychonaut remains one of the best introductions to this unique, disturbing, and liberating stance towards life. Visual Magick by Jan Fries is an excellent introduction to the forms of freestyle shamanism most chaos magicians practise, while Practical Sigil Magick by Frater U.D. is one of the most accessible analyses of the most commonly used technique in chaos magick - sigilizing.
Chaos magick is a form of ceremonial magick, a spiritual discipline as old or older than religion, in which ritual is used to develop states of consciousness of sufficient power to bring about changes within the psyche of the magician or in the universe outside. Ceremonial magick presupposes a magickal intention, a wish on the part of the magician to actualize a desire. Historically magicians have had an uneasy relationship with adherents of religion. Religion generally prefers to define the desires of its members within a structure of appropriateness justified with the sanction of moral law. Magick tends to allow the discovery of morality to be a personal adventure. Chaos magick, rejecting the traditional discrimination of magick into white, grey, and black, is a highly individualistic approach to the interplay between ethics and personal will.
Bearing similarities to dada, performance art, tibetan "crazy wisdom", zen and other deviant forms of art, religion, and philosophy, chaos magick is results oriented and practical. It is a series of techniques , rituals, and conceptual postures designed to create a testable, and hopefully, repeatable effect. Since the results sought by chaos magicians are often mundane and utilitarian (getting a job, protecting property, healing an illness, avenging a wrong) Chaos Magick is more properly a form of sorcery with strong shamanistic tendencies than of the ceremonial magick with which it is often associated.
Anarchistic, clever, self-referential, and self-annihilistic, chaos magick seems almost the perfect metaphysical stance for the Internet and the World Wide Web..
