Pay-offs For Layoffs
Fact:
When Lockhead and Martin Marietta merged recently, laying off 30,000 workers, Congress appropriated $31 million in taxpayer money for executive bonuses.
Source:
"Pentagon-Lockhead Deal" Newsday, Sept. 30, 1995; William Hartung, The Nation, June 19th 1995.
Sweet deal for the CEO's, not so good for the dumped workers. Executives from Lockhead Martin claim that the merger will save the Pentagon $1 billion over five years. They further claim that there is nothing special or unusual about these bonuses--it's been going on for years. The Director of Defense Procurement tried to clarify the situation by explaining that the $31 million was not for bonuses, but was "employee deferrment compensation payments."
Maybe he meant:"executive payments for deferring employees?"
