23rd Missouri Volunteer Infantry

IF YOU HAVE INFORMATION TO ADD ABOUT A VETERAN, PLEASE E-MAIL THE NAME, RANK, COMPANY AND INFORMATION YOU WISH TO ADD

I no longer maintain the entire list of 23rd Missouri Volunteer Infantry veterans on this webpage. You may conduct a name search through the National Park Service website. This page is intended to document information not found on the National Park Service website.

The names, ranks and positions are as found in official records. Quite often soldiers would join other companies and be promoted on expiration of enlistment. Many soldiers rejoined at the end of their 3-year enlistment as "Veteran Corps". Many privates and sergeants went home at the end of their 3-year enlistments before the war ended and were elected officers of local militia units. During the Civil War, regiments were organized into a command staff about 20 officers and 10 lettered companies commanded by a Captain each having 100 officers, NCOs and men. The ten companies were lettered A through K with "J" omitted as it too closely resembled "I" in written correspondence. This would make a full regiment ideally over 1,000 men. Regiments were rarely at full strength at one time. Enlistments were for 3 years and the regiment existed for almost 4 years. Members were enlisted at various times during the war. It has not yet been determined how many men served in the 23rd Missouri but with new enlistments and re-enlistments, the actual number exceeded 1000. The National Park Service website indicates 2,119 names. I doubt this to be correct as many names are listed several times.
