Course Comments for The Florida Club
This course has water on about half of its holes but it is more noted for some very large waste bunkers. At least 7 holes have waste bunkers that are in excess of 100 yards long that run parallel to the fairways. The #9 and #15 holes have waste bunkers that run the entire length of the hole. As is the case at the PGA Dye Course you can drive your cart into most of these waste bunkers; they also serve as cart paths. Incidently Dick Gray, the course architect, was a protege of the famous Pete Dye who designed the PGA Dye Course. If you've played both courses you will no doubt see some similarities on a few of the holes. This course measures 6792, 6310, 5865 and 5497 yards from 4 sets of mens' tees and 4988 yards from the ladies' tees. Greens were only about average in quality when we played here in July 1999 when we paid about $26 for 18 holes with a cart but in all fairness to this course, this was immediately after about 2 weeks of solid rain that happened in late June of that year. Five or six real pretty holes on this course. The #8 hole is a 529 yard dog-leg left par-5 with water on the left that is certainly reachable in 2 by better golfers (because I came within 15 yards myself) except that the fairway narrows significantly as you get closer to the green. The #18 hole is a challenging dogleg-left par-4 ranging from 395 to 472 yards requiring a reasonably long shot over water to the final green. There are at least 3 other dogleg par 4's on this course. In August 2000 we read an interesting article in one of the local newspapers that a local farmer whose property abuts one of the Florida Club fairways was raising a large number of hogs on his property and was playing loud music for them to keep them happy. The golf course was seeking legal action to have him and his hogs removed but was only successful in getting the music stopped. We last played here in July 1999 and didnt notice this. We never did hear the final outcome of this humorous story. One of you reported in October 2000 that this course was in mediocre shape but didn't mention the farmer.

GREAT COURSE. GPS IN CARTS. WELL LAID OUT WITH LOTS OF FL ---WATER
AND SAND.
Played here on a coupon deal for $23 after 12 pm on 6/26/02. Course
is in very good shape, perhaps not quite as meticulously nice as Lost
Lake in terms of condition but still very, very nice. This is a test
that I think all golfers should apply to themselves. The number 12
hole is a slight dogleg right par-4 that is not real difficult if
played from the white tees, 368 yards but can also be 433 yards from
the blues or a very difficult 457 from the championship tees. This
hole has to have the widest fairway I have ever seen on a golf course
anywhere. In some places I bet it is in excess of 130 yards wide.
Anybody that misses this fairway with their drive should take this as
an omen and sell their clubs and give up the game. They are now
selling Florida Club hats with the "No Pigs Allowed" symbol
on the side as a novelty item for $15 in their pro shop. Apparently
the farmer(s) won't go away. They tell me there are now 2 of them and
the one farmer is at #4 & #5 hole and the other is at #15. I
personally did not notice any pigs or any loud music at any of these
holes when I played.
Played for $32 on 11/3/02. Course in beautiful shape. The pigs and
the music could be heard on one hole on the back nine. Loved the GPS
in the carts.
Played on April 9th for $29 after 3pm & April 10th for $35 before
9am - Both prices still valid. Course condition was excellent. This
place is built out west and can be wet in summer but in winter it
stays lusher than most others. It had the best fairways I've played
on since October. There was actually thick grass under the ball. The
greens were fast & smooth. Error on keeping the ball in front of
the green rather than long. Seems like long is trouble most of the
time here.
