Course Comments for Indianwood G.C.

For about a decade now upon every visit to the Treasure Coast I have been seeing advertisements in the local papers for this golf course. At the urging of a friend who also vacations in the area we finally drove down to Indiantown to play a round on Christmas Eve 2002 on a $25 plus tax coupon deal good for anytime of the day that time of the year. First and foremost I must say that this course by far exceeded my expectations. I expected to find a shabby not-very-well kept course at Indianwood similar to the bottom 5 or 6 on my "Course Rankings" page and what I found was at least average for the 3-dozen plus courses on that same web page. And average on that list is nothing to be ashamed of. The fairways were in great shape, greens were soft yet kind of fast and a pleasure to putt on and the tee-boxes were superb. Although a somewhat older course I would classify this course to be better than average in terms of scenery. This is a Par-70 course and is just over 6000 yards from the longest tees, 5616 yards from the shorter white tees and 4750 yards from the ladies tees. The front nine is a good 400 yards longer than the back nine for the men and that's for a simple reason. There are 2 extra Par-3's on the back nine and 2 fewer Par-4's thus creating an overall Par-70 instead of 72. There is water on perhaps 16 of 18 holes and water that is actually "in play" on most of those 16 holes. I personally lost about 8 balls playing here for the first time, but my name is "Mr. Spalding." You will also get no less than 4 challenging Par-5's on this course, the toughest being #4, a long dog leg right around water. The toughest handicap hole is #9 a dogleg left Par-4. On this hole I drilled what I thought was a perfect drive only to find myself at a 5-wood distance to a small green surrounded on 2 sides by water. I hit what I thought was an almost perfect 5 wood and found myself in the trap just to the left of the green that saved me from the water and allowed me to bogey rather than get much worse. The Indianwood Community is a modular home type of development which is far better described if you go to their website. Just driving thru the development after leaving the course I noticed that at least every other home there had a golf cart parked in the car-port. I don't know if these carts come with the homes or if the owners simply have them to reduce their golfing costs. Even at only 6008 yards from the long blue tees, unless you are a 5 handicap or better, I would recommend you play the shorter white tees the first couple times out until you start to memorize where alot of the trouble is on this course. My only bitch about this course is when I went to tee-off on the back nine I noticed a cluster of 4 golf carts gathered around the 10th green. I thought nothing of it until I got to the #11 tee, a Par-3 and noticed no less than 7 golfers walking onto the green with putters. They continued to play this way, oblivious to anyone behind them for another hole. By the time I got to the 12th green I had made 2 cell phone calls to the clubhouse who quickly sent out a ranger to #13 tee to break up this happy group and send 3 of them off to #1 where they should have teed off from a few holes earlier. They were mostly kids but there were at least 2 adults in charge who should have known better than to condone it. Anyway, the staff did a good job in responding to my complaint. There are 7 courses on this website which are located west of I-95 (namely Indianwood, The Florida Club, PGA North, PGA South, PGA Dye, The Majors and The Great Outdoors) and this course is the westernmost of them, about a 14 mile drive from Exit #110 (The same exit as Cobblestone CC) on I-95. This golf course advertises in most of the Treasure Coast newspapers almost on a daily basis. They offer a very attractive rate and if you take the time to drive a few extra miles I'm sure you'll find it a worthwhile experience. For me it was well worth the trip.

Interesting side note, I read that the architect of this course, Ted McAnlis, was indicted by the IRS in December 2002 for some big-time income tax evasion. So unless you play this course you won't be playing any new McAnlis designs anytime soon.
