Course Comments for Martin County C.C. Red/White Course
This is by far the oldest golf course in the area, built around 1920 by architect(s) unknown. It is a municipal course owned and operated by Martin County. Prior to about 1961 if you wanted to play golf on the Treasure Coast and you didn't belong to a private club in the area you were very likely going to play here. Shorter than most of the courses in the area this course has three sets of tees ranging from 5468 yards for the ladies to 6436 yards for the men. Water is not as much a factor on the Red/White Course as its sister the Gold/Blue. That is to say most of the ponds are lateral water hazards. This course features 4 dog-legs left in the first 5 holes and then on the back nine (the White Course) there are 3 dog-legs to the right including a very reachable 462 yard par-5. It's one of a few holes on the entire course with no greenside sandtraps and no water. Almost all of the greens are guarded by one or two sand traps, usually 2. When I played here in Summer 2000 we played all 27 holes that were available to us for $22 with a cart and could have played all 36 for the same price had the Red Course been open. Just after Christmas in 2002 I was finally able to play the Red Course including the 9 holes I had missed 2 years earlier. When I played on Dec 28, 2002 the course was in very nice shape. The greens seem to be somewhat of a dormant brown shade, (this can be seen in one of my photos on the [directions] page) but they held my approach shots nicely and were very nice to putt on. For greens which are 82 years old I have to say they are very nice. I would rank this course as being roughly equivalent to Savannahs at Sykes Creek, Club Med Sandpiper, Gator Trace, and Turtle Creek. Definitely not top shelf courses but certainly a cut above Indian Pines and The Saints at Port Saint Lucie. In my opinion what keeps this course and the 4 courses I mention just above from being top shelf courses is a) the condition or quality of the grass in the rough b) the slightly shabby way that the greens and sand traps are manicured, c) the quality of the turf on the tee-boxes. I paid $27.78 to play 18 with a cart this day. Actually I was supposed to pay about $4 more but the lovely young lady in the proshop mistakenly rang me up as a Martin County resident.

THE RED/WHITE COURSE IS A "C" RATED COURSE. TOO SLOW AND
POOR FAIRWAYS AND TOO EASY A LAYOUT. WITH A TWILIGHT 3 PM RATE OF $10
WITH A CART THIS IS A GOOD VALUE ON THE TREASURE COAST. THE GOLD AND
BLUE COUSRSE IS IN GOOD SHAPE WITH A CHALLENGING LAYOUT. SPEED OF
PLAY IS GOOD. THIS IS A "B" RATED COURSE FOR ME. (EAGLE
MARSH/BALLANTRAE/HAMMOCK CREEK ETC. ARE "A'S".
On 2 occasions this past June/July I attempted to play the Red/White
Course simply because the Red is the only course on the Treasure
Coast List that I have never played. On both occasions I tried to get
on as a single and was turned away usually because one of those two
nines was closed for several hours because of league play. I cannot
understand why these 2 courses are so crowded when only a few miles
away is the Champions Club at Summerfield for $20 where you can
almost have the course to yourself. Someday, maybe I'll get to play
the Royal and Ancient Red Course. But for now I guess I'll have to wait.
Finally was able to make it onto the Red Course. Played 18 holes
yesterday including the White Course. See my revised writeup above.
Why is it impossible to get an early tee time on the Gold & Blue
courses. Even though I try from 6 A.M. for a tee time 5 days later,
all the early times are reserved usually until 3 P.M. I was told it's
the luck of the draw. I don't believe this. Can someone enlighten me?
Scoccal2@aol.com:....see my message 2 messages above yours. It took
me 4 years to finally get a round in on all 4 nines at Martin County.
It might be that it's fairly cheap and I believe they give Martin
County residents a big discount. One day last July while vacationing
on Hutchinson Island I arrived early as a single about 9:30am with
hopes of getting on the Red/White because I had never been on one of
those 2 nines. Nothing doing. There was a league playing that had
that course tied up all morning. I motored over to Champions Club,
paid $20 and had the course almost all to myself. I can't explain it really!
